Haemorrhoid Banding
Discharge Instructions – Haemorrhoid Banding
Please note that within 24 hours of having your procedure you must not:
- Drive a car
- Operate machinery
- Drink alcohol
- Undertake responsible business or sign documents
Bowel habit: ensure regularity and ease:
- High fibre diet
- Eight glasses of water or other fluid per day
- Normacol/Metamucil/Fybogel – 2 teaspoons/day to maintain a soft motion
Analgesia:
- Take paracetomol or Digesic – 2 tablets at a time up to every 6 hours as required
- Notify me if you are requiring stronger pain-killers
- Avoid codeine as it is constipating
- Ice packs applied 20 minutes at a time, and/or warm baths may help in the first 1 to 2 days
Expect:
- To have the urge to empty your bowels after this procedure. This sensation is normal, but does not necessarily mean that your bowels need to be emptied. Sit on the toilet but do not strain. This sensation will slowly disappear over the next 24 to 48 hours.
- Some bleeding will occur after 7 to 14 days. This is the result of the banded tissue falling off. This bleeding should be minimal and stop within a short period of time.
- A dull discomfort within the anus. This is normal and will wear off over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Follow-up:
Please make an appointment to see Dr Simpson in the rooms in_________weeks.
Notify the rooms on (02) 4367 6444 if you:
- Experience a fever or are becoming generally unwell
- Cannot pass urine
- Have excessive bleeding from the anus
- Experience increasing anal pain after the second post-banding day
- Experience any symptoms that you feel are not normal
